“If my mind can conceive it and my heart can believe it – then I can achieve it”
Muhammad Ali
The definition of visualization given by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is “the formation of mental visual images or the act or process of interpreting visual terms or of putting them into visible form.”
If you’re like most people, this definition probably does not make much sense to you – or maybe like many people, you think visualization is ‘woo-woo’ or spiritual stuff that does not really work.
The popular documentary The Secret made it sound so easy to visualize and manifest anything you like.
However, visualizing what you want is just the beginning.
I’d like to show you how powerful using visualization is, and how it helped me to achieve a 7 figure business. I’m also going to show you how you can use it in your own life.
How can you do this?
The first step is creating a macro-visualization of the business you really want – or more importantly, how you want to spend your time. What is a macro-visualization? It’s a larger, broader idea of what you want to achieve in the future.
The best way to get this answer is by getting quiet – spend time in nature, pray, meditate – whatever your thing is that gets you to a place of calm. Ask God, the universe or whoever you connect with what you really should be doing with your life? What are you passionate about? How do you want to change the world?
This macro-visualization is so important as it will give you clarity, conviction and focus which you will need in order to carry out your plan. Most businesses fail – in Canada, 20% of businesses fail in the first year and 60% fail within three years with higher failure rates in the USA. Having a very solid base for your vision, and a very strong conviction, will help you to succeed.
Once you have your business idea, test it out with a few friends or potential customers. See who else is doing this same business – How are they doing? How do they get customers? Where are they located? How can you do it better? What processes can you improve upon or streamline? Is your business idea viable? How much money will you need to start it up? Will you incorporate or operate the business as a sole proprietorship? Think through all of the minor details such as your office location (if you’re going to have one), business hours, employees or staffing etc. Also to consider are the processes – How would people pay you? How do you do your accounting and bookkeeping?
You need to consider all the logistics and fine details to make your business a reality, leaving no stone unturned.
In this case, you want a 7 figure business, so how many customers will you need to achieve this and how much you will you need to charge for your product or service?
Once you’ve done all of this, now it’s time to execute.
This would include a name, logo and website, and then you’ll need massive action and marketing to get customers.
Marketing ideas include things such as direct sales, email newsletters, digital marketing, SEO (organic and paid search), trade shows etc.
Once you implement marketing tools, you’ll start to see what type of marketing is working best for your business. At this point you want to start micro-visualization. Micro-visualization is where you visualize success in the small details and processes. For example, visualizing your first successful sales call, your first customer, etc. This is important as it gives you the initial confidence, belief and certainty that you’ll need to get good results.
Believe it will happen, visualize it, feel it. How will you feel once your business has started? How will it change your life?
Creating a strong belief is really important as you need to see it happening to actually have it happen.
In my most recent video, I shared an exercise on how visualization works – try it and see for yourself. This is something I’ve learned from studying with Tony Robbins.
If you’re still not sold on visualization, here’s a cool research study for you. In 1967, Australian psychologist Alan Richardson visited a team of college basketball players. Richardson watched the players taking free shoots at the hoop and recorded each player’s accuracy. He then randomly divided the players into three different training groups.
Group A were instructed to come to the court and spend twenty minutes a day practising free shoots.
Group B were told to refrain from basketball completely for thirty days. Group C were instructed to spend 20 minutes a day visualizing successful free shoots, but were told not to touch a basketball over the course of the study.
After 30 days, Group A improved their accuracy by 24%. Group B, unsurprisingly, made no progress. Group C, however, demonstrated a 23% improvement, just one percent short of the group that practiced every day.
Not so ‘woo-woo’ any more, right?
Who else uses visualization?
From World Cup winning skier Lindsey Vonn and Michael Jordan, to Idris Elba and Jay Z, each of them uses visualization techniques to not only give them a competitive edge, but also to cultivate a sense of belief, build confidence and to help create motivation and momentum to realize their dreams and live the lives they truly desire.
Jack Nicklaus has won a record 18 professional majors and is considered the best golfer in history. He has described how he used visualization extensively to help him prepare and win at golf.
Tiger Woods was taught how to use visualization and imagery when he was a boy by his father, Earl. Tiger visualizes exactly where he wants the golf ball to go.
When Jim Carey was broke and barely getting started in Hollywood, he wrote himself a cheque for 10 million dollars and visualized himself getting paid this amount. He then was paid 10 million dollars to star in the hit movie Dumb and Dumber. He explains in this interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Visualization is an important tool for success. Set your intention and don’t sway from it – be flexible but keep your focus on the end result. Using visualization, both macro and micro, can be transformational in all areas of your life – not only in your business life, but in your personal life, and within your own personal growth.
